From Bump to Baby’s First Year: Creating a Family Story You’ll Actually Want to Keep

Everyone tells you it goes fast.

"Enjoy every minute!"

"They grow up so quickly!"

And you're standing there holding a screaming newborn at 3 a.m., wearing yesterday's pajamas, wondering if you've brushed your teeth recently, thinking…

Yeah, okay. Sure. Whatever you say. 😂

And then one day, you look at an old picture of your baby and wonder how the hell they got so big.

Who gave them permission to grow?!

As a photographer, I spend a lot of time thinking about the memories attached to photographs. Because the moments we think we'll remember forever? Sometimes those are the exact ones we forget the little details of.

That's why I love documenting families through all their seasons: the pregnancy, the newborn days, the missing teeth, the awkward teenage years and everything in between.

Family photography isn't just about how your family looks today. It's about remembering what it felt like to be your family.

It Starts With the Bump

Before there's a baby, there's the waiting.

The growing belly. The tiny clothes. The nursery you've spent hours putting together, even though the baby will probably be more interested in the cardboard box something came in.

Pregnancy is beautiful, emotional, exhausting and sometimes makes you feel like a swollen potato. You might feel amazing and uncomfortable before lunchtime. 😂

But somewhere in the middle of it all, you're becoming someone's mom.

A maternity photography session captures more than your belly. It captures who you were before you met your baby, the people standing beside you and the family you are right before everything changes.

Because you only get to be this version of your family once.

Then Comes the Tiny Human Who Runs Your Entire Life

Suddenly, they're here!

Your beautiful, tiny baby who has become your boss without having a single qualification.

They decide when you sleep, eat, shower and leave the house. You used to make plans. Now you're calculating how many diapers you need for a 20-minute trip to Target.

And somehow, in the middle of all that chaos, you fall completely in love.

The tiny fingers. The sleepy faces. The way they fit against your chest. The newborn clothes that somehow still look enormous on them.

These are the moments I love documenting during newborn photography sessions.

Your house doesn't have to be spotless. Your baby doesn't have to sleep the entire time. And please don't spend three hours cleaning before I arrive just so I can photograph one little corner of your house. 😂

We're here to photograph your family, not conduct a surprise home inspection.

I want the cuddles, the connection and the beautiful mess of those early days.

Because one day, that tiny baby will be asking for the car keys, and you'll wonder how the hell that happened so quickly.

The First Year: A Million Little Changes

One minute, you're supporting their head. Then they're rolling, crawling, walking and throwing food on the floor like they've personally decided the dog deserves a five-course meal.

Their faces change. Their personalities emerge. They develop funny little habits you swear you'll never forget.

Then comes the first birthday. Maybe they smash the cake. Maybe they stare at it suspiciously.

Both are valid reactions. 😂

You don't need professional photographs every month, but documenting a few milestones throughout the first year gives you a beautiful reminder of just how much has changed.

And when you look back, you'll be amazed at how tiny they were.

A Little Personal Perspective From a Mom Who's Living It

Okay, can I get a little personal?

I have a teenager and a pre-teen, so when I tell you time goes ridiculously fast, I'm not just repeating something I've heard other moms say.

I've seen that shit up close and personal. 😂

How did we get here?!

One minute, you're the center of their universe. The next, you're embarrassing them simply by existing in the same room.

Apparently, I know nothing now. It's fine. I'm fine.

But underneath the jokes, there's something that really hits me.

I can remember them as tiny little kids, but I know there are things I've already forgotten. The exact sound of their little voices. The funny things they used to say. The way they ran toward me when they were excited.

You think you'll remember everything because those moments feel so big when you're living them.

But life keeps moving.

And suddenly, you're looking at an old photograph thinking, Oh my goodness. I forgot they used to do that.

That's one of the biggest reasons I believe family photography matters so much.

Not just maternity photos. Not just newborn photos. Family photos when your kids are five, ten, thirteen, seventeen… and every age in between.

Our kids don't stop being worth photographing when they stop being little.

I want to remember who my kids are right now—their personalities, ridiculous jokes, smiles and awkward phases. And I want to be in those pictures, too.

Because one day, they'll have their own homes, routines and lives. And as much as we'll celebrate that, I know there will be days when I'll miss the noise, the chaos and even being asked what's for dinner approximately 47 times.

Okay, maybe not that part. 😂

But I'll miss the ordinary days that make up family life.

So when I tell you to get in the picture with your kids, I mean it as a mom watching her own kids grow up, not just as a photographer telling you to book a session.

Don't stop taking family photos when your kids get older. Photograph the missing teeth, the goofy smiles, the teenagers who insist they hate pictures and the family you are today.

Trust me. I'm living it.

One Day, They Won't Be Living at Home Anymore

The house will be quieter.

There won't be backpacks dumped by the door or someone yelling your name every 14 seconds. The fridge might actually contain food for more than an afternoon.

And you might miss it.

One day, your kids will grow up, move out and build lives of their own. That's what we want for them, of course. But that doesn't mean we won't miss the little versions of them.

The bedtime stories. The Saturday morning cuddles. The little voices and the way they used to fit perfectly in your arms.

When that day comes, photographs will help you revisit those chapters.

You'll remember the family vacations, the ridiculous haircuts, the missing teeth and the way everyone laughed.

You won't get these exact years back. But you'll have something that helps you remember them.

That's why family photography matters at every age—not just when your kids are babies.

Your Family Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

"My kids won't cooperate."

"My husband hates pictures."

"My teenager will absolutely refuse."

I hear you. 😂

We're not trying to turn your family into a department-store portrait from 1997.

We can walk, talk, laugh, play and be ourselves. I'll guide you, but I also want room for your family to just be your family.

If your teenager gives you a dramatic eye roll, that might be the most accurate photograph of this stage of life.

And someday, you'll probably laugh about it together.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is to create photographs that feel like the people you love.

Family Photography in Massachusetts

Whether you're expecting your first baby, chasing a toddler, raising school-aged kids or wondering how your teenager got so tall overnight, I'd love to help you document this season.

I photograph maternity, newborn and family sessions throughout Lowell, Tewksbury, Chelmsford, Acton, Littleton, Boston and surrounding Massachusetts communities.

We can photograph the bump, the baby, the first birthday, the missing teeth, the growing kids and all the beautiful, ridiculous moments in between.

You don't need to wait for a milestone, the perfect outfit or a time when everyone finally has their life together.

Let's be honest. We'd be scheduling sessions in 2047. 😂

Your family, exactly as it is right now, is worth remembering.

Someday, when your kids are grown and the house is quieter, you'll be so glad you have these photographs.

Not because everyone looked perfect.

But because you were all there, together.
