Before You Meet Your Baby: The Woman, Mother, and Family You Are Becoming

There is a strange little space in time that happens during pregnancy.

You're still the person you've always been.

But you're also becoming someone new.

You're still you.

But you're becoming a mother—or becoming a mother again.

Your family still looks one way.

But you already know it's about to change.

And somewhere between the excitement, the anticipation, the discomfort, the doctor's appointments, the nursery preparations and the endless conversations about names, there is this quiet realization:

Life is about to be completely different.

That's what I think maternity photography is really about.

Not just documenting your belly.

Not just getting a pretty picture in a beautiful dress.

It's about remembering who you were right before everything changed.

There is a version of you that only exists right now

Pregnancy can be complicated.

You may feel beautiful.

You may feel uncomfortable.

You may feel powerful.

You may feel exhausted.

You may look in the mirror and recognize yourself completely—or wonder who that woman is staring back at you.

Maybe you're counting down the days.

Maybe you're wishing time would slow down.

Maybe you're experiencing all of those feelings before breakfast.

That's motherhood, isn't it?

So many emotions can exist at the same time.

And I don't think maternity photographs need to pretend otherwise.

They don't have to show a perfect pregnancy.

They can show your pregnancy.

You're not just waiting for a baby

You're waiting for a new version of your life.

Your routines will change.

Your relationships will change.

Your priorities will change.

Your home will change.

And if you already have children, your family dynamic will change too.

There's a little person you haven't met yet who is already changing your family.

That's pretty incredible when you stop and think about it.

A maternity session gives us an opportunity to photograph that in-between season.

The season where your baby is still with you, but not yet in your arms.

If this isn't your first baby, there's another story happening

Maybe you've done this before.

Maybe you've already experienced the sleepless nights, the tiny clothes, the newborn snuggles and the complete shock of realizing how quickly babies grow.

But pregnancy can feel completely different when you already have children.

Because now you're not just waiting for a baby.

You're watching your child become a big brother or big sister.

And that deserves to be remembered.

The little hand resting on your belly.

The curiosity.

The excitement.

The questions.

The way they talk about "the baby."

Maybe they're completely obsessed with your growing belly.

Maybe they couldn't care less.

Maybe they're already practicing being a big sibling.

Those moments are part of the story, too.

Your partner belongs in this story

Maternity photography doesn't have to be all about you standing in front of the camera.

It can be about the two of you.

The person who has been beside you through the appointments.

The person who has watched your body change.

The person who may be just as excited—and maybe just as nervous—as you are.

Hold hands.

Laugh.

Walk together.

Put your hands on your belly.

Look at each other.

Don't worry about posing perfectly.

I want to photograph the relationship underneath all of it.

Because one day, you'll look back at those photographs and remember not only that you were pregnant…

but who was standing beside you.

And then there are the tiny details

Sometimes it's the smallest things that become the most meaningful.

The curve of your belly.

Your hands resting over your baby.

A pair of tiny shoes waiting at home.

The nursery you've been putting together.

The older sibling's hand on your stomach.

The way your partner looks at you.

The little things don't seem important because you're living them.

But years later?

They can be everything.

You don't have to feel "beautiful" to have beautiful photographs

I want to say this because I know how many women feel uncomfortable in front of a camera.

Especially during pregnancy.

Your body may not feel familiar.

Maybe your clothes fit differently.

Maybe your face looks different.

Maybe you're tired.

Maybe you're swollen.

Maybe you don't recognize yourself in photographs right now.

You don't have to show up already knowing how to pose or feeling completely confident.

That's where I come in.

I'll guide you.

I'll help you find flattering light and natural movement.

I'll give you direction without turning you into someone you're not.

And we'll leave room for the moments that happen naturally.

Because I don't want you to look at your maternity photographs and see a version of yourself that doesn't feel real.

I want you to see you.

Someday, your child may look at these photographs

This might be my favorite part.

Your baby won't remember your pregnancy.

They won't remember how excited you were.

They won't remember the way you talked about them before you met them.

They won't remember how their older sibling waited for them.

But someday, they may look at these photographs.

And they'll see the woman who carried them.

They'll see the people who were waiting for them.

They'll see the family they were born into.

And maybe they'll understand just a little bit more about how loved they were before they ever took their first breath.

That's more than a maternity photograph.

That's part of their story.

Massachusetts gives us the perfect backdrop for this season

Maternity sessions don't have to look a certain way.

We can photograph outdoors among the trees, gardens and fields throughout the Merrimack Valley.

We can find beautiful New England scenery around Lowell, Chelmsford, Acton, Littleton, Tewksbury and surrounding Massachusetts communities.

Or we can keep things simple and intimate at home.

Sometimes home is the perfect setting.

The place where you're preparing to bring your baby home.

The nursery.

The couch where you'll spend countless hours feeding and cuddling.

The bedroom where you'll eventually learn what 3 a.m. looks like.

Those ordinary spaces become part of your family's history.

Before you become "Mom," remember the woman who was here first

There is so much focus on the baby during pregnancy.

And understandably so.

But I want maternity sessions to give you a little space to remember yourself.

The woman.

The partner.

The daughter.

The friend.

The woman who had dreams and plans and a life before this little person came along.

Motherhood doesn't erase that person.

She comes with you.

She grows with you.

And she deserves to be photographed, too.

Because this isn't just a photograph of a pregnant woman.

It's a photograph of a woman standing at the beginning of something completely new.

And someday, when you look back, I hope you don't just see how you looked.

I hope you remember how you felt.

The anticipation.

The uncertainty.

The excitement.

The love.

The waiting.

The becoming.

And the tiny person who was already changing your life before you ever met them.

Maternity Photography in Massachusetts

If you're expecting a baby in Boston, Lowell, Tewksbury, Chelmsford, Acton, Littleton or the surrounding Massachusetts area, I'd love to create a maternity session that feels personal to you.

Not overly posed.

Not cookie-cutter.

Not about trying to look like somebody else.

Just YOU, your people, and this incredibly short season of your life.

Because eventually, you'll meet your baby.

And everything will change.

Let's remember the before while you're still living in it.
