Why I Love Being a in Massachusetts

There is something about living in Massachusetts that makes you appreciate the little things. Although deep down inside I hate the cold months, I do enjoy that we get four very different seasons.

Maybe it's the old stone walls, brick mill buildings, winding roads, beaches, forests, farms and tiny downtowns.

Or maybe it's because New England has a way of making ordinary things feel nostalgic.

A walk through the neighborhood.

The first warm day of spring.

Apple picking in the fall.

The first snow day.

Summer evenings when the kids are outside until someone finally yells, "Dinner!!!"

These are the things I love photographing.

The beauty of everyday life

As a photographer, I don't only think about the big moments.

Of course I love photographing maternity sessions, newborns and beautiful family portraits.

But I'm equally interested in everything that happens around those big moments.

The way your toddler reaches for your hand.

The way your teenager rolls their eyes when you ask them to take a picture.

The way your baby's entire hand fits around your finger.

The way your family laughs when nobody is paying attention to the camera.

Those are the photographs that become more meaningful as time passes.

Massachusetts gives us so many different backdrops

One of my favorite things about photographing families around Massachusetts is that we don't have to force every session into the same setting.

We can photograph your family at home.

We can head outside.

We can find a quiet wooded trail.

We can use a beautiful garden.

We can photograph you downtown surrounded by brick and architecture.

Or we can simply find a patch of beautiful light.

The Merrimack Valley alone gives us so many different possibilities.

Lowell has its historic mill buildings, canals and urban textures.

Chelmsford has ponds, wooded areas and open green spaces.

Acton offers gardens, conservation land and beautiful natural settings.

Littleton gives us lakes, trails, woods and wide-open spaces.

And then there is Boston, with its city energy and unmistakable New England character.

And… we can choose a location based on your family’s passions.

I love photographing the seasons

Spring sessions feel fresh.

Everything starts turning green again.

Summer sessions are warm, playful and full of movement.

Fall?

Well, we're in Massachusetts. You already know fall is a big deal here. 😂

Then winter comes along and gives us something completely different.

Bare trees.

Soft, beautiful light.

Cozy sweaters.

Sometimes snow.

Sometimes absolutely no snow whatsoever because Massachusetts likes to keep us guessing.

Every season changes the feeling of your photographs.

And I love that.

Your family doesn't have to look perfect

This might be one of the most important things I want families to know.

You don't need coordinating outfits (unless you want them).

Your children don't need to sit perfectly still.

You don't need to know how to pose.

And your house doesn't need to look like a magazine.

I want your photographs to feel like your family.

A little messy.

A little loud.

A little goofy.

A whole lot of love.

That's real life.

And that's what I want to capture.

Why photographs become more important with time

When you're living through the busy years of raising children, it can be hard to imagine how quickly everything changes.

The baby who used to fit on your chest eventually becomes a toddler.

The toddler becomes a kid.

The kid becomes a teenager.

And suddenly you're wondering how they got so tall.

Photography gives us a way to pause that.

Not because we can stop time.

We can't.

But we can make a record of it.

We can look back and remember the little details we would have otherwise forgotten.

That is why I became a photographer in the first place.

I've always loved taking pictures.

I've always been the person with a camera—or a phone—trying to capture something before it disappears.

And after all these years, I still love it.
