Posed newborn photography is the style many people picture when they hear “newborn photos.”
Your baby is carefully positioned, usually on a beanbag or other posing surface, and photographed in a variety of intentional poses.
These sessions often include:
Carefully wrapped babies
Sweet curled-up poses
Simple or decorative props
Parent and sibling portraits
Detailed close-ups of tiny hands and feet
Carefully styled setups
Some lifestyle pictures as well

What is lifestyle newborn photography?
Lifestyle newborn photography is a little different.
Instead of trying to make everything look perfect, the goal is to document your family as you are right now.
That might mean your baby snuggled against your chest.
Your partner changing a diaper.
A sibling gently touching the baby’s head.
Tiny toes sticking out from a blanket.
You sitting on the couch with your newborn while sunlight comes through the window.
Maybe the nursery isn’t magazine-perfect.
Maybe there are bottles on the nightstand.
Maybe someone is still wearing pajamas at noon.
That’s okay.
Actually, that’s part of the story.
Lifestyle newborn photography is about preserving the feeling of those early days rather than simply creating a collection of perfect portraits.
Which newborn photography style is more natural?
If you want photographs that feel candid and emotional, lifestyle photography may be the better fit.
Lifestyle sessions typically involve gentle direction rather than complicated posing.
I’ll still help you figure out where to sit, how to hold your baby and where the best light is. You don’t have to worry about “what do I do with my hands?”

The goal isn’t to make you look like professional models.

What if my baby doesn’t cooperate?
This is probably one of the biggest concerns I hear from new parents.
“What if the baby cries?”
“What if they won’t sleep?”
“What if they need to eat?”
“What if they need a diaper change every five minutes?”

A newborn photography session has room for all of those things.
Babies don’t care that you scheduled a photography session.
They have their own agenda.
And that’s one reason I love a more relaxed approach to newborn photography. We can pause for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, soothing and whatever else your little one needs.
There is no expectation that your baby has to perform for the camera.
What about siblings?
This is another area where lifestyle newborn photography can be especially beautiful.
If you have an older child, we don’t have to force them to sit perfectly beside the baby and smile at the camera.
We can photograph them interacting naturally.
Maybe they want to hold the baby’s hand.
Maybe they want to read a book beside them.
Maybe they give the baby approximately 37 kisses.
Maybe they are completely uninterested in the whole situation.
Yep. That can be photographed too.
Those little interactions often become some of my favorite images because they show your children exactly as they were during this chapter of their lives.
What makes a newborn photograph meaningful?
Years from now, you probably won’t remember whether your baby’s blanket was perfectly positioned.
You may not remember whether every strand of hair was in place.
But you will remember how tiny they were.
You will remember the way their fingers wrapped around yours.
You will remember how they fit against your chest.

You will remember the exhaustion.
The overwhelming love.
The quiet moments.
The chaos.
The tiny person who completely changed your world.
