Why You Should Include Your Family in Your Maternity Session (Trust Me... You'll Never Regret It)

Let's get one thing out of the way.

I know you're probably thinking this maternity session is about the baby growing inside your belly.

And it is.

But it's also about something much bigger.

It's about the family you're becoming.

Holy moly... that's kind of amazing when you stop and think about it.

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, your family is about to change forever. Someone is about to become a big brother. Someone is about to become a big sister. Your partner is about to watch you become a mother all over again.

Those are stories worth remembering.

As a maternity photographer serving Lowell, Boston, Chelmsford, Tewksbury, Acton, Littleton, and families throughout Massachusetts, one of my favorite things is watching siblings interact with Mom before the baby arrives.

The hugs.

The giggles.

The tiny hands rubbing Mom's belly.

The questions like...

"Can the baby hear me?"

Cue all the happy tears.

It's Not Just About the Belly

Don't get me wrong.

I absolutely love those gorgeous solo portraits where you're glowing (or at least pretending you're not out of breath walking across a field... because honestly... pregnancy is no joke).

But some of my favorite images?

They're the ones where your toddler wraps their arms around your legs.

Where your partner sneaks a kiss on your forehead.

Where everyone is laughing because someone made a silly joke.

Those are the moments that tell your family's story.

Siblings Make the Session More Meaningful

If your little one is becoming a big sibling, this is such an important milestone for them too.

They may not remember these months.

But years from now, they'll be able to look back and see just how excited they were waiting for their baby brother or sister.

Maybe they kissed your belly every five seconds.

Maybe they were more interested in collecting sticks than smiling for the camera.

Honestly?

Both are adorable.

As a photographer—and a mom—I can promise you that I never expect children to sit perfectly still.

I'd much rather capture their real personalities than force a smile that lasts two seconds.

Your Partner Belongs in These Photos Too

Can I tell you a little secret?

So many partners tell me afterward...

"I didn't really want to do photos."

And then they see the gallery.

Suddenly those quiet moments become some of their favorite memories.

The way they looked at you.

The way they held your hand.

The excitement before meeting the newest member of the family.

It's pretty special.

Don't Stress About Perfect Behavior

Oh man...

If you've got toddlers, you're probably already wondering...

"What if they don't cooperate?"

Here's the good news.

They don't have to.

Kids are wonderfully unpredictable.

We'll play.

We'll explore.

We'll laugh.

We'll take snack breaks if we need to.

Some of the very best photographs happen in between the poses anyway.

Those genuine belly laughs.

The running hugs.

The curiosity.

That's the magic.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

You don't have to wear a huge flowing gown to have beautiful maternity photos.

If that's your style, amazing.

If it's not, that's okay too.

The best outfit is one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful.

Because when you feel good...

It shows.

These Photos Become Part of Your Family's Story

One day your children will ask what it was like before the baby was born.

You'll tell them stories.

You'll laugh about the sleepless nights and the pregnancy cravings.

But you'll also have photographs.

Photographs that remind them how loved they already were before they even entered the world.

Whoa...

That's something pretty incredible.

If you're looking for a maternity photographer in Lowell, Boston, Chelmsford, Tewksbury, Littleton, Acton, or anywhere throughout Massachusetts, I'd love to help create a session that feels relaxed, joyful, and filled with genuine connection.

Because the best maternity photos aren't just about pregnancy.

They're about love.

They're about family.

And they're about celebrating the beautiful chapter you're living right now before everything changes—in the very best way.
