When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session? (Hint: Earlier Than You Think!)
If you're reading this while you're still pregnant—high five! You're already ahead of the game.
One of the questions I hear all the time is:
"When should I book my newborn session?"
And the answer usually surprises people...
The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester.
I know, I know. It feels a little crazy planning photos before your baby has even arrived. But hear me out.
As a newborn photographer serving Lowell, Boston, Chelmsford, Littleton, Tewksbury, and families throughout Massachusetts, I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Babies have absolutely no respect for calendars (seriously... they'll come whenever they feel like it), so photographers schedule around your due date instead of your baby's birthday.
That means waiting until after delivery can sometimes mean your favorite photographer is already booked.
Why the First Two Weeks Matter
Many parents wonder why photographers recommend photographing babies between 5-14 days old.
During this time, babies tend to:
Sleep more deeply
Naturally curl into those adorable womb-like poses
Be easier to gently position
Have fewer stretches of wakefulness
Of course, beautiful newborn photos can absolutely be taken after two weeks! Every baby is different.
I've photographed older newborns who gave us the sweetest eye contact and little smiles that completely melted everyone's hearts.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is capturing your baby exactly as they are.
What If My Baby Comes Early... or Late?
Oh man... babies love keeping us on our toes.
When you reserve your session, your photographer should schedule you based on your estimated due date. Once baby arrives, you'll simply reach out, and together you'll choose the exact session date.
No stress.
No panic.
No trying to book while you're recovering in the hospital.
Don't Worry About Looking "Ready"
This is probably my favorite myth to bust.
Parents often tell me:
"I'll wait until I lose the baby weight."
"I want the house to be clean."
"I need to feel more put together."
Friend...
You just grew an entire human.
No one expects perfection.
Your baby isn't going to remember whether your hair was curled. They're going to have photographs showing just how loved they were from the very beginning.
And honestly?
Those are the images that matter most.
A Few Things to Look for Before Booking
When choosing a newborn photographer, make sure you look through full galleries—not just Instagram highlights.
Read reviews.
Ask about safety training.
Make sure their editing style feels timeless.
Most importantly, choose someone who makes you feel comfortable.
Because if you're relaxed...
Your baby usually is too.
Let's Preserve This Tiny Chapter
Those tiny wrinkles.
The flaky newborn skin.
The sleepy yawns.
The little fingers wrapped around yours.
Holy moly... they disappear so incredibly fast.
Booking your newborn session before your baby arrives simply gives you one less thing to think about during those beautiful, exhausting first weeks of parenthood.
If you're expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Lowell, Boston, Chelmsford, Acton, Littleton, Tewksbury, or anywhere in Massachusetts, I'd love to help you preserve these memories before they become just that—memories.
